Florida's LGBTQ+ capital, mapped for marketers. A short read on Wilton Manors, marketing inside Florida's 2026 political climate, the post-SFGN media landscape, the equality scorecards, the HIV frontline, and how brands earn trust in South Florida.
The Big Picture
The most LGBTQ+-affirming metro in America sits inside the state writing the anti-LGBTQ+ playbook. Understanding that tension is the whole job in South Florida.
This is the second guide in Pink Media's LGBTQ+ Regional Guide series — after Palm Springs, we head east to Greater Fort Lauderdale (Broward County), a metro of nearly two million people drawing from more than 170 countries. At its center sits Wilton Manors, a two-square-mile city of roughly 12,000 that Census-based analysis ranks as America's second-gayest — about 140 same-sex couples per 1,000 households, trailing only Provincetown. Wilton Drive is one of the country's densest strips of LGBTQ+-owned bars, restaurants and retail, and in 2018 the city elected Florida's first all-LGBTQ+ commission.
Unlike its Palm Springs predecessor, this guide devotes a full chapter to the political climate — because in Florida, skipping that context isn't neutrality, it's malpractice. The headline finding: local government here remains among the most affirming in the nation (three perfect MEI 100s), even as the state advances new restrictions. The state makes headlines; the community makes the market.
Marketing in Florida, 2026
No honest guide can skip the state it sits in. Florida has spent recent years as the nation's testing ground for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation — from the 2022–23 "Don't Say Gay" laws and gender-affirming-care restrictions to a 2026 session advancing an "Anti-Diversity in Local Government" bill (HB 1001/SB 1134) that would bar cities from sponsoring or promoting Pride festivals, plus measures expanding workplace speech restrictions and a companion bill to repeal LGBTQ-targeted HIV/AIDS outreach. In May 2023, Equality Florida and HRC issued a formal travel advisory — notably not a boycott, but a risk briefing.
Here's what the headlines miss. Broward's cities still score perfect 100s, Visit Lauderdale markets inclusion as its core brand, and the community's institutions are strong. The community isn't asking brands to stay away — it's asking them to show up with eyes open: fund the organizations doing the defending, keep sponsorships steady when state politics get loud, prepare comms teams for scrutiny from both directions, and understand that if state law strips public funding from Pride and HIV outreach, private-sector dollars become the difference between events happening and not.
The Media Landscape
South Florida just lived through a generational media turnover — and how it responded says everything. When the South Florida Gay News (the paper of record since 2009) closed in 2023 after founder Norm Kent's death, the community didn't lose its press — it rebuilt it within months. SFGN veterans launched OutSFL / Out South Florida, now the region's LGBTQ+ newspaper of record: weekly print plus daily digital, a magazine, an annual directory, and newsletters, published from the heart of Wilton Manors and covering the state-level legislative fights from the community's side.
Layer the rest of a deep bench: Hotspots / Happening Out, the decades-old nightlife brand now paired with a TV/streaming network and event production; OutClique for glossy lifestyle across South Florida; Visit Lauderdale's always-on LGBTQ+ content hub, which functions as destination media; and mainstream outlets (Axios Fort Lauderdale, Sun Sentinel, WPLG) that cover LGBTQ+ civic life as a core beat. National press — the Washington Blade, Advocate, and LGBTQ+ travel media — cover this market continuously, and Miami's media market amplifies everything southward.
The Equality Scorecards
This community checks scores — and in Broward, they hold up despite state headwinds. HRC's Municipal Equality Index saw a record 132 U.S. cities score a perfect 100 in 2025, eight of them in Florida. The valley's core cities are all among them:
| City | 2025 MEI | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fort Lauderdale | 100 | Perfect year over year — non-discrimination ordinances, LGBTQ+ liaisons & services credited |
| Wilton Manors | 100 | Government scores as strong as the street life; all-LGBTQ+ commission since 2018 |
| Oakland Park | 100 | The quieter third city of the LGBTQ+ core — perfect score maintained |
| Regional context | 100s | Miami Beach and other South Florida cities also posted perfect scores |
These 100s are more impressive because state preemption has cost Florida cities points they once earned (for example, transgender-inclusive employee health benefits) — so Broward's cities max out every lever they still legally control and use flex credit to hold the line. Layer HRC's Corporate Equality Index — where the cruise capital's Carnival Corporation earned Best Place to Work six years running, alongside Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, the major hotels, and FLL's carriers (American, Southwest, United, Alaska, JetBlue) — and the Healthcare Equality Index, where Holy Cross Health earned High Performer status and Broward Health is HEI-rated. For marketers, the read is simple: risk assessments that stop at "Florida" miss that the municipal layer here is as strong as San Francisco's.
The Frontline & the Infrastructure
South Florida carries some of the nation's highest rates of new HIV diagnoses, which makes Broward's health organizations essential civic infrastructure — and with 2026 legislation threatening to repeal LGBTQ-targeted HIV outreach, the private funding behind them matters more than ever. Broward House delivers comprehensive HIV housing, healthcare and prevention; Latinos Salud runs one of the country's most effective culturally-specific programs (24,000+ HIV tests and ~2,000 new PrEP starts a year); and the county public-health layer provides free PrEP access points now under legislative threat.
One of the largest LGBTQ+ community centers in the United States: a 30,000-square-foot campus hosting programs, services, and dozens of community organizations across Broward and Palm Beach counties — from one of the nation's largest LGBTQ+ senior communities to HIV testing to hundreds of weekly meetings. Alongside it, SunServe provides specialized LGBTQ+ social services, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber runs the LGBT Visitors Center where destination marketing meets Main Street.
One of the largest LGBTQ+ archives, libraries, and museum collections in the country — preserving civil-rights history and programming exhibitions, author events, and its Circle of Pride community year-round. In a state actively censoring LGBTQ+ content from classrooms, an independent LGBTQ+ history institution isn't a nice-to-have — it's a frontline cultural asset, and a distinctive sponsorship property for brands that want their support to mean something.
The DMO & the Calendar
Visit Lauderdale, the DMO for Greater Fort Lauderdale, did something few destinations have attempted: it made inclusion the entire destination brand. Its "Everyone Under the Sun" campaign stars local LGBTQ+ community members, people with disabilities, and the full range of the county's 170+ nationalities — and it launched pro-LGBT+ work precisely when state politics turned hostile. Where other DMOs quietly shelved LGBTQ+ campaigns, Visit Lauderdale went the other way, because LGBTQ+ travelers are among the destination's highest-value, highest-repeat visitors. For travel brands, it's the rare DMO partner whose LGBTQ+ commitment carries institutional weight.
The calendar runs year-round, anchored by two Prides — a winter beach Pride (Pride Fort Lauderdale, Florida's oldest) and June's marquee Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors (June 20, 2026), with its illuminated Glow Night Parade down Wilton Drive. Add the twice-yearly OUTshine Film Festival (spring and fall, across both counties), FLoatarama (the nation's largest LGBTQ+ Pride-on-water fundraiser), Wicked Manors (South Florida's largest Halloween street party), Miami's Winter Party 30 miles south, and a bar strip that never goes dark. The calendar here isn't a season — it's an operating rhythm.
The Playbook
The full guide closes with seven rules, and they compress to one idea: in Florida in 2026, showing up earns trust — and trust is the only currency this community has ever really traded in. Don't confuse the state with the market: build your risk assessment on Broward's three MEI 100s and the DMO's posture, not on Tallahassee headlines. Start with the community's own media (OutSFL for news, Hotspots for nightlife, OutClique for lifestyle). Fund the defenders — Equality Florida, the Pride Center, SunServe, the Stonewall Museum — because here, sponsorship is the message. And show up in February, June, and October: two Prides and Wicked Manors give you three street-level moments, and the gala circuit fills the gaps.
Two more that matter uniquely here. Respect the market's diversity — this is a majority-minority county with Florida's only LGBTQ+ Caribbean festival and one of its strongest Latino HIV organizations, so creative that defaults to one demographic misses most of the market. And prepare your comms for both directions: brands here face scrutiny from anti-LGBTQ+ activists and from a community watching who flinches. Decide your posture before you buy, and hold it.
This page is the summary. The complete guide goes deep across 13 chapters — the demographics and Wilton Manors, the full political-climate briefing, the media landscape, the MEI/CEI/HEI scorecards with sources, the HIV frontline, the community institutions, Visit Lauderdale, the winter-through-fall event calendar, and the South Florida marketing playbook.
